Cycling Tuscany by E-Bike

Tour Highlights

Tuscany is well known for its stunning panoramic vistas, quaint villages, winding country roads and vineyard covered hills, and so it is considered a perfect destination to explore by bicycle (especially by an E-bike!)
Tuscany’s rolling hills and valleys are covered in grape vines, cypress trees, olive groves, old stone farm houses and medieval hilltop villages.  Although the terrain can be varied, we have provided for this by arranging all E-Bikes for this special program (electric bicycles, also known as “Booster Bikes”). E-bikes have an integrated electric motor which can be turned on and off whenever the cyclist needs a boost.  Why not have the pleasure of cycling this fantastic region with the benefit of some extra power when you need it?  In combination with the cycling excursions there will be scenic coach travel and enriching walking tours in the main city centres.  A specialized bike guide will accompany us for all our cycling adventures and the walking tours will feature local guides who will enlighten us as to all the wonderful highlights unique to each city we visit.

The total distance we will cover will be 160 kms. (averaging 40 kms per cycling days) with a total ascent of 1500 meters. Sightseeing will include the spectacular Chianti region, medieval Siena, the charming village of Monteriggioni, traditional Lucca, Pisa with its leaning tower, the typically Tuscan towns of San Gimignano and Volterra, and romantic Florence.

Our home base will be Tavarnelle Val Di Pessa, a village in the middle of the countryside with rows of vineyards and cypresses surrounded by spectacular views. It is ideally situated midway between Florence and Siena, near to the “must see” towns of San Gimignano and Monteriggioni.  We will stay 7 nights at the Hotel Bogo Di Cortefeda, a 4-star superior property with spacious and comfortably furnished guest rooms.  The hotel restaurant serves traditional Tuscan cuisine and regional wines.

*** The tour will be limited to 25 participants who must be fit and active.

Tentative Itinerary

We depart for Rome.
We arrive in Rome and transfer to our hotel in Tavarnelle, our home in the Tuscan countryside for the next 7 nights. There will be an orientation meeting with our local bike guide before our Welcome Dinner this evening.
Today we make our first venture on our E-Bikes to the magical Chianti region and the little village of Monteriggioni, perched on a hill surrounded by a wall made famous in Dante‘s Divine Comedy. From here we travel by coach to Siena, one of the most beautiful towns in this region. We will enjoy a typical lunch at one of the popular local restaurants, followed by a walking tour to discover the charming maze of medieval streets that surround the famous shell-shaped main square of Piazza del Campo and the historic centre.
Lucca is a traditional Tuscan city with well-preserved medieval city walls and many interesting sights, including the San Marino Cathedral. We travel by coach to Lucca to enjoy a walking tour of the city, also known as the “open-air museum of Tuscany” for its abundance of impressive monuments. We will indulge in a wonderful sampling of local products during a farmhouse lunch before we continue to Pisa. On our walking tour of this charming town we see the impressive cathedral, the baptistery and, of course, the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa (entrance optional).
This morning we depart on our E-Bike tour through the typical hilly countryside of Tuscany with its cypresses, vineyards, country houses, castles and medieval villages. Our destination is San Gimignano where we will have a treasure hunt to discover the unique hidden corners of the historical center. We will return by E-Bike back to our hotel in the afternoon.
We travel by coach to the alabaster city of Volterra, a former Etruscan settlement located on a rise with a splendid view of the surroundings. We will have a walking tour of the most important sights followed by some free time before continuing to the picturesque village of Lari, home to Europe’s smallest pasta factory. We will learn about the ancient and strictly Italian art of pasta, with a chance to purchase special traditional products.
Today we explore the best kept secrets of the Chianti region as we E-Bike through vineyards, past magnificent cypresses and hidden “Borghi“ (small communities). We will reach Gaiole, an enchanting place where we will learn everything about the Italian art of wine growing and production. After a wine tasting with local snacks, we continue through the Chianti Valley, at the end of our day returning to our hotel by coach.
Any holiday in Tuscany would not be complete without a visit to the art and cultural metropolis of Florence. We will drive part way by coach then ride our E-Bikes in to Florence from the surrounding hills to appreciate beautiful views of the wonderful city skyline. The cathedral of Florence dominates the cityscape, together with the Campanile and the baptistery, forming one of the most recognizable views in Italy. We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before embarking on a walking tour. We then ride our E-Bikes through picturesque villages and hamlets to the typical Tuscan town of Signa, where we meet our coach to drive back to our hotel. This evening is our Farewell Dinner.
We fly transfer to the Rome airport for our flight home.
