Majestic Cities of Europe
and Oberammergau

Tour Highlights

On this unique tour we visit some of Europe’s most beautiful and historic cities, delight in the extraordinary scenery of mountain and lakes, and attend the world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play – an event that only occurs once every 10 years.
We will spend time in these cities:

Berlin - the “Fall of the Wall”, the city is now a world leader in fashion, art, design, music and museums.

Radebeul / Dresden - is a wine village just outside Dresden, former home of Saxon Kings and now a cultural centre restored to its former baroque splendour.

Prague – The ancient capital of Bohemia has soaring cathedrals, lavish palaces and festive city squares.

Munich – Bavaria’s capital has a fascinating history, small town charm and a beautifully restored Old Town.

Lucerne - medieval town nestled along the edge of a sapphire-blue lake and stunning mountains, lined with waterfront promenades and picture-perfect wood bridges.

Oberammergau - highlight of our tour is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  The residents of this quaint Bavarian village have been performing this emotional play every 10 years since 1647 to honour a solemn pledge to “The Almighty”. As the Black Death (bubonic plague) swept across Europe, some of the villagers survived and made a vow to re-enact the agony of Christ’s crucifixion in thanks for being spared.  There is a cast of 600 and a chorus of 100. The beautiful open stage is framed by magnificent alpine scenery. The play is in German but there are ongoing translations. We have the best available seating for the play.

*** Those joining any of our tours to Europe must be able to walk fairly long distances and climb stairs easily.

Tentative Itinerary

We depart for Berlin.
We arrive in Berlin and transfer to our hotel. The rest of the day is free until our Welcome Dinner.
On our tour of Germany’s capital we see the restored Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate where “The Wall” began, the museum at Checkpoint Charlie, the elegant Kurfurstendamm, Unter den Linden Boulevard, the German State Opera House and more. The afternoon will be free to visit one of the many museums on Museum Island or embark on an optional cruise on the River Spree to see Berlin from another viewpoint.
It’s wine and porcelain today as we head along the Saxon Wine Route to Meissen. This romantic city by the Elbe River is known the world over for Europe’s finest porcelain. After our visit we continue to our hotel in Radebeul - a wine village surrounded by vines growing on terraces.
Today our walking tour of Dresden shows us the historic city centre, the Church of our Lady, Dresden Castle, the Semper Opera House and the Frauenkirche. We will visit the Green Vault Museum – Dresden’s legendary chamber of treasures restored to its pre-war glory. It showcases radiant gemstone-studded riches within the Dresden Castle. A leisurely cruise later takes us to our panoramic dinner venue.
We travel through the scenic countryside to the “Golden City” of Prague, for a 3-night stay.
Our coach and walking tour will show us the stunning sights of the Hradcany Castle District, with a visit to the majestic St. Vitus Cathedral, the Loretto Chapel (known for its incredible wooden staircase of astounding craftsmanship) and “The Golden Lane” – named after the goldsmiths who lived here in the 17th century.
Our guided walking tour takes us across the Charles Bridge to Lesser Town’s winding narrow streets, where we see the artisan houses, small 17th century palaces, the Jewish Ghetto and the famous astronomical clock. We will enjoy a river cruise through the historic district, then an afternoon at leisure to go shopping (best buys are crystal and garnet jewelry) or to enjoy a dark ale and people watching at a sidewalk cafe.
On route to Munich we stop in Regensburg, one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities. Our guided walking tour will show us the Old Town Hall, the Porta Praetoria and the stone bridge where Knights of the Crusade crossed the Danube on their way to the Holy Land. We continue to Munich for a 2-night stay.
Munich is the cultural centre and capital of Bavaria, and is one of Europe’s wealthiest cities, apparent in its Baroque grandeur, elegant shopping streets, vast gardens, boulevards with remarkable edifices, fountains, statues and graceful bridges that span across the river. We visit Nymphenburg Castle – an Italian style palace that was once the summer residence of Bavarian rulers. This evening we’ll enjoy the local cuisine at a typical Hofbrauhaus (Beerhouse).
Today is the highlight of the tour – The Passion Play in Oberammergau. In addition to its famous play, the town is renowned for its wonderful woodcarvings, painted houses and Christmas shops. The Oberammergau Passion Play is performed only every ten years and involves hundreds of amateur actors from the local population. The play is presented in two parts, before and after dinner. Our overnight is at a nearby hotel.
This morning we visit Mad King Ludwig’s fairytale castle that inspired Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom. Even its positioning is out of a dream - in the heart of the Alps with a magnificent landscape surrounding it. Later we drive through beautiful Alpine scenery to Lucerne, Switzerland, considered by many to be among the most charming cities in Europe. This well-preserved medieval city is surrounded by the snowcapped Alps and is situated on a beautiful glacial lake.
Our walking tour takes us along Lake Lucerne and through the city’s Old Town. We’ll see the Hofkirche Church, the Old Town Hall, Chapel Bridge (the symbol of Lucerne) and the famous Lion Monument – carved in deep relief into a sandstone cliff. A panoramic cruise on Lake Lucerne completes our tour. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. You may wish to take the “Dragon Ride” to Mt. Pilatus, visit a chocolate shop or look for some typical Swiss souvenirs – army knives, watches and more. Tonight is our traditional folkloric Farewell Dinner!
We transfer to the Zurich airport and fly home.
