Trinidad and Tobago

Hailed as the true Caribbean, the dual-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago offers a very unique holiday experience found nowhere else.
The warm, tropical marine climate here is especially enjoyable during the winter months, and while the lush rainforests and pristine white-sand beaches combine to make a perfect winter escape, it is the country’s rich history, lively culture and warm, welcoming spirit of the people that will make you feel totally at home.

On this holiday we will experience the best of both islands, starting with a 7-night stay in Trinidad’s bustling capital of Port of Spain. This exciting city hosts the famous Carnival festival, great restaurants and shopping, popular Cricket matches and historic buildings layered within a multicultural setting and homegrown calypso attitude. While in Trinidad our touring will include a city tour of Port of Spain, a breath-taking coastal drive and beach excursion, renowned wildlife sanctuaries, a cultural tour highlighting the island’s strong Indian influences, and an evening “Panyard” visit to experience the original steel drum music the country is passionately dedicated to.  In Trinidad we stay at the Hilton Port of Spain, ideally situated in the hills overlooking the city, featuring all the amenities of a First Class Hilton hotel, including a restaurant, bar, gift shop, room service,  pool, tennis court and fitness room.  Guestrooms are modern and include a private balcony.

We then take a short flight to the smaller island of Tobago - a relaxing tropical paradise where time almost stands still.  Beautiful beaches, active coral reefs and lush rainforests with exotic flora and fauna make Tobago a nature lover’s dream. An island tour and exhilarating glass-bottom boat cruise show off the island’s endless beauty.  Our accommodation for our 7 nights in Tobago is the Coco Reef Resort & Spa, a perfect combination of Old World charm and modern amenities.  The private white sand beach is one of the best on the island with a specially built lagoon that creates a tranquil swimming area.  You can choose from a range of water sports, book a spa treatment, or simply relax by the pool. Excellent local cuisine is available in two restaurants offering both buffet and a la carte dining options.  Guestrooms include a balcony or terrace.

Itinerary / Excursions

We depart for Tobago and connect on our inter-island flight to Port of Spain, Trinidad. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel for our 7-night stay. This evening is our Welcome Dinner.
Today our city tour shows us the historic buildings including the Parliament, Holy Trinity Cathedral, the National Library and Independence Square. A visit to the Lady of Young Lookout offers a wonderful view over this unique port city. We will visit the Angostura rum factory, where the Caribbean’s leading brand of rum is produced, to see the distillery, learn about the founding family, sample a variety of local rums and enjoy a lunch of traditional local fare.
Today we visit the Asa Wright Nature Centre - the oldest of its kind in the West Indies and world renowned for bird watching. Join a leisurely nature walk or relax on the viewing veranda and spot wildlife and birds (more than 150 species of birds have been recorded). A buffet lunch is included before we depart on our afternoon visit of the Caroni Bird Sanctuary where we take a scenic boat ride through the mangroves. Keep your eyes out for kingfishers, cardinals, flycatchers and the national bird of Trinidad - the Scarlet Ibis.
A day at leisure to enjoy the facilities of our hotel or to further explore Port of Spain.
Our tour of Central Trinidad highlights the island’s diverse culture. First we visit a local market with fresh produce, then see Hindu temples including the Temple in the Sea (built when the South Asians of the island were not permitted to build on cane land), where we will have an opportunity to gaze up at the 85-foot-high Hanuman Statue. Considered a protector of the gods from evil powers, this sculpture is the largest such statue outside of India. After an included lunch we visit the East Indian Museum and enjoy a demonstration of pottery making at a local shop.
Day at leisure.
Today we drive the stunning North Coast Road to popular Maracas Beach. Admire the views of the Paramin Hills to the west with its plantations of herbs and spices, and thick rainforest to the east. Upon reaching the Caribbean Sea we stop for a spectacular panoramic view of the ocean, small islands that dot the coast and surrounding bays. There will be free time to enjoy a stroll on the beach, perhaps take a short swim or relax in the sun. Lunch at the beach will be “Shark & Bake” - a local Trinidadian specialty. This evening we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and visit an authentic “pan yard” practice to enjoy the incredible sounds of the steel drum - the instrument for which Trinidad is famous.
We take a short flight back to the small island of Tobago and transfer to our hotel for a 7-night stay . The balance of the afternoon is at leisure until our dinner this evening.
Our full-day island tour begins in the capital, Scarborough, where we visit historic Fort George - one of the last colonial forts in Tobago to be built and the best preserved on the island. We then continue up the coast through typical Tobago countryside to Argyle Cocoa Plantation for a tour, and of course a sample of the chocolate! Lunch will be at Jemma's famed tree house restaurant with an array of local dishes. After lunch we return to our hotel via a drive across Tobago's mountain ridge passing many small coastal villages, secluded beaches and lush tropical vegetation.
