Itinerary / Excursions
Day 1: Departure
We depart for Port of Spain. Upon arrival we take an inter-island flight to the small island of Tobago, and transfer to our hotel for our 6-night stay. This evening is our Welcome Dinner.
Day 2: Island Tour / Tobago
Today’s full day island tour begins in the capital, Scarborough, where we visit historic Fort George - one of the last old colonial forts in Tobago to be built and the best preserved on the island. We then continue up the coast through typical Tobago countryside to Argyle Cocoa plantation for a tour, and of course a sample of the chocolate! Lunch will be at Jemma's famed tree house restaurant with an array of local dishes. After lunch we return to our hotel via a drive across Tobago's main mountain ridge, passing many small coastal villages, secluded beaches and lush tropical vegetation.
Day 3: Tobago
At leisure to enjoy our beach resort, take an optional tour or visit nearby Pigeon Point. This evening we will have dinner at the Blue Crab Restaurant in Scarborough, an experience you won’t soon forget!
Day 4: Glass Bottom Boat and BBQ Lunch / Tobago
Today we enjoy a glass bottom boat ride to Coral Gardens to see the wonders of Tobago’s marine diversity. We will visit Nylon Pool where we can take a dip in the crystal-clear water. We then head to Shearbird Point for a delicious BBQ lunch on the beach with time for a swim and a stroll on the beach.
Day 5 & 6: Tobago
At leisure to relax at our hotel or further explore the island.
Day 7: Port of Spain
We take a short flight back to Port of Spain and check into our hotel for an 8-night stay.
Day 8: Port of Spain
Our city tour shows us Port of Spain’s historic buildings, including the Parliament, Holy Trinity Cathedral, the National Library and Independence Square. A visit to the Lady of Young Lookout offers a wonderful view over this unique port city. We will visit the Angostura rum factory, where the Caribbean’s leading brand of rum is produced. We’ll see the distillery, learn about the founding family, sample a variety of local rums and enjoy a lunch of traditional local fare. This evening we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and visit an authentic “pan yard” practice to enjoy the incredible sounds of the steel drum – the instrument for which Trinidad is most famous for!
Day 9: Central Island Tour
Our Tour of Central Trinidad highlights the island’s diverse culture. First, we visit a local market with fresh produce, then see Hindu temples including the Temple in the Sea, (built when the South Asians of the island were not permitted to build on cane land). We will have an opportunity to gaze up at the 85-foot-high Hanuman Statue. Considered a protector of the gods from evil powers, this sculpture is the largest such statue outside of India. Lunch is included before we visit the East Indian Museum and enjoy a demonstration of pottery making at a local shop.
Day 10: Port of Spain
At leisure to explore this exciting city or surrounding area.
Day 11: Asa Nature Centre & Caroni Sanctuary
Today we visit the Asa Wright Nature Centre - the oldest of its kind in the West Indies and world renowned for bird watching. Join a leisurely nature walk or relax on the viewing veranda and spot wildlife and birds (more than 150 species of birds have been recorded). A buffet lunch is included before we depart on our afternoon visit of the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, where we’ll enjoy a scenic boat ride through the mangroves. Keep your eyes out for kingfishers, cardinals, flycatchers and the national bird of Trinidad – the Scarlet Ibis.
Day 12: Maracas Beach
Today we drive the stunning North Coast Road to popular Maracas Beach. Admire the views of the Paramin Hills to the west with its plantations of herbs and spices, and thick rainforest to the east. Upon reaching the Caribbean Sea we stop for a spectacular panoramic view of the ocean, small islands that dot the coast and surrounding bays. There will be free time to enjoy a stroll on the beach, perhaps take a short swim or relax in the sun. Lunch at the beach will be “Shark & Bake” - a local Trinidadian specialty.
Day 13: Gasparee Caves Boat Tour
We travel along the picturesque North West Coast to Chaguaramas, where we embark on a scenic boat ride to the small island of Gaspar Grande. Here, we will enjoy a short leisurely hike to an amazing underground cave with a deep pond known as the “Blue Grotto”. We will learn about the stalagmites and other unusual rock formations during our tour.
Day 14: Port of Spain
A final day at leisure for some last-minute shopping. Our Farewell Dinner is at the hotel.
Day 15: Home
We fly from Port of Spain direct to Toronto.
